Alarming cases of pregnancy among girls aged 10-14

Health officials are raising the red flag over the alarming surge of pregnancies among girls aged 10 to 14.

Based on data of the Capiz Provincial Health Office, cases of teenage pregnancies among the 10-14 age bracked jumped to 38 in 2022.  In comparison, there were only 13 in 2016.

Mary Grace Somil of the Population Management Section warned this disturbing trend puts the health and future of these minors at serious risk.

During the recent Kapihan forum of Philippine Information Agency (PIA), Somil stressed that pregnancies in this age group are considered “too young” and pose serious health risks to both the mother and the child.

Somil cited several contributing factors, including easy access to pornographic content on social media, early onset of menstruation without proper education, unprotected sexual activities, and lack of parental guidance.

“If possible, no to early sexual involvements. Better safe than sorry. For children who are already sexually active, they should practice safe sex,” Somil said.

On another note, the Capiz Provincial Health Office showed that teenage pregnancies in the province dropped for a two-year period.

From 1,099 cases in 2022, it dropped to 984 in 2023. It dropped further to 866 in 2024.

To lower the numbers of teenage pregnancies, the province is strengthening the role of the 78 Teen Centers that serve as safe spaces within schools and communities.

“The purpose of the Teen Center is to help adolescents have a recreation area or safe space. Instead of going anywhere after class or skipping classes, they can stay here,” said Myleen Dogelio, focal person of the Adolescent Health and Development Program.
