Youngest Pinoy grandmaster wins Capiz chess tournament 

Daniel Quizon, the country’s youngest chess grandmaster (GM), emerged as champion of the 4th Eduardo Basilonia Touchmove: Invitational Open Rapid Chess Tournament in Roxas City, Capiz.

Scoring a total of 6.5 points, the 20-year-old Quizon defeated veteran GM Rogelio “Joey” Antonio Jr. in the final round. 

The August 24, 2025 tournament at SM City Roxas was the first time Capiz witnessed four Filipino GMs competing. The other two GMs were Darwin Laylo and John Paul Gomez.

“The long-cherished dream came true,” said Basilonia.

A total of 128 competitors from all over the country participated in the seven-round Swiss system format chess tournament. 

Fide master (FM) Mark Jay Bacojo trailed behind Quizon and ranked second.

GMs Laylo and Antonio ranked third and fourth respectively. 

Rounding up the top 10 were FM David Elorta, national master (NM) Fritz Bryan Porras, Jan Clifford Labog, GM Gomez, NM Edsel Montoya, and FM Alekhine Nouri.
