Roel Bryan Alsagon became the first Capisnon to earn the Arena International Master (AIM) title from the Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE), the international governing body of chess.
“He is the first Capisnon chess player to earn the FIDE AIM title,” said chess coach Kenneth Calvez.
Alsagon achieved a rating of 1488 in Bullet and 1774 in Blitz on the 2025 FIDE Online Arena (FOA).
The FOA is the official online chess platform where players can earn FIDE-recognized titles such as Arena Candidate Master (ACM) or Arena Grandmaster (AGM) by reaching specific Elo ratings in online games.
Elo is a numerical rating system in chess that measures a player’s relative skill level; a higher number indicates a stronger player.
A licensed electrical engineer, Alsagon is also a professor at Colegio de la Purisima Concepcion in Roxas City.
When he was still in college, Alsagon was a top chess competitor who represented Capiz State University (CapSU).
Alsagon has secured his place as one of the top Capisnon chess masters with the latest FIDE title.
Meanwhile, Felixberto Baguyo Jr. of Roxas City also earned a title from FIDE as FIDE Master.
