There were only 25 firecracker-related injuries recorded in Capiz province during the recent holiday season.
Joeffrey Espiritu of the Department of Health (DOH) in Capiz said the firecracker-related-injuries reflected a 19.35% decrease. In comparison to the same period of the 2024-2025 holiday season, there were 31 cases recorded.
Per locality, the Capiz Provincial Health Office found that Roxas City and the Municipality of Dumalag had the most number of firecracker-related injuries with five cases each.
The Municipality of Dumarao followed with four people injured by firecrackers while the Municipalities of Mambusao and Pontevedra had three cases each.
The Municipality of Jamindan had two injuries while the Municipalities of Ivisan, Panitan and Tapaz had one injury each.
Despite the overall decline, seven victims suffered finger amputations and majority of them were heavily drinking while handling firecrackers. In comparison to the 2024-2025 holiday season, there was no amputation recorded.
One of the amputation victims was a 13-year-old boy from Pontevedra. His third finger was amputated after a “bawang-bawang” firecracker exploded in his hand.
Another victim was a 56-year-old man from Barangay Barra in Roxas City. He was under the influence of alcohol when a whistle bomb exploded. This resulted to the loss of his ring finger.
Another victim was an 18-year-old boy from Dumarao. He lost his index finger.
A 45-year-old man from Dumalag lost a finger on his right hand after a whistle bomb exploded.
Another amputation victim was a 39-year-old man from Mambusao. His middle finger was cut after a “kwitis” exploded.
The sixth identified victim was a 32-year-old man. He lost his third finger after a whistle bomb detonated in his hand.
