Stories that spark

Long before laboratories, textbooks, and digital simulations, arrived in our schools, our mind was already filled with stories. We were told stories to lull us to sleep after lunch, or when our grandmother would tell us important life lessons. I remember when I once refused to take my midday siesta Lola would warn me that if I dare venture out in the garden, the tamawo would abduct me.  And then, our elders tell more stories that explained why the moon changed shape, why lightning split the sky, why birds migrated, or why rain sometimes fell while the sun continued to shine. These stories were not merely entertainment. They were humanity’s earliest attempts to understand the natural world, way way before the Western colonizers introduced their viewpoints. 

Storytelling bridges one of the challenges in learning by transforming abstract concepts into meaningful experiences. Students may forget a formula or a definition, but they rarely forget a good story. A lesson on the water cycle becomes more memorable when raindrops embark on an adventurous journey from the ocean to the clouds and back to Earth. A discussion on biodiversity becomes more engaging when students discover the remarkable survival strategies of species through stories rooted in local ecosystems. Even complex ideas such as evolution, astronomy, or genetics become more accessible when presented as unfolding narratives rather than isolated facts. This is how powerful storytelling is.

Folktales about rivers, forests, mountains, animals, and weather often contain observations accumulated over centuries. While the explanations may be symbolic or spiritual, they reveal careful attention to patterns in nature and provide valuable insights into how communities interacted with their environment. Rather than dismissing these narratives as mere folklore, teachers can use them as entry points for scientific inquiry. A classroom discussion may begin with a traditional belief and gradually guide students toward investigating the scientific processes behind it. In doing so, learners recognize that science does not erase culture but enriches it through dialogue and evidence.

Storytelling humanizes science. Most importantly, stories awaken wonder. They encourage learners to ask “Why?” before they ask “What?” They cultivate imagination alongside critical thinking, showing that creativity and science are not opposites but partners in discovery. Every hypothesis begins with imagining a possibility, and every investigation begins with a story waiting to unfold.

Perhaps the greatest lesson storytelling offers is that learning is not simply about coming up with the correct answer but more on igniting curiosity and appreciating different ways of knowing. After all, some of the greatest scientific breakthroughs started when someone wondered about the world, and every wonder begins with a story.
