4 grandmasters to join chess tournament in Roxas City

Four of the country’s grandmasters (GMs) will be among the 128 competitors of the 4th Eduardo Basilonia Touchmove: Invitational Open Rapid Chess Tournament in Roxas City.

GMs Rogelio “Joey” Antonio Jr., Darwin Laylo, John Paul Gomez, and Daneil Quizon are competing against 124 other chess players at SM City Roxas on Sunday, August 24. 

The four Filipinos GMs brings decades of experience—from Olympiad stints and international triumphs to the chess boards in Roxas City. 

The 63-year-old Antonio is the country’s 3rd GM earning the title back in 1993. 

Laylo followed in 2007 as the 7th Filipino GM while Gomez became the 10th GM in 2009. 

Quizon, the youngest at 20, was hailed as the nation’s 18th GM in 2024 after a remarkable run at the Chess Olympiad. 

Basilonia is inviting all Capiznons to witness the much-anticipated tournament. 

The event is free and open to the public.
