Several areas in Roxas City and other parts of Capiz remain at high risk of flooding as Severe Tropical Storm (STS) Inday threatens to bring heavy rains to the province, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Unit (PDRRMU) said.
Speaking during the PIA Kapihan on July 9, PDRRMU head Atty. Sheila Artillero identified Barangays Bolo, Lawaan, and Tiza in Roxas City, as well as portions of President Roxas and Sigma, among the areas that require close monitoring due to their continued vulnerability to flooding during strong weather disturbances.
She explained that the province maintains “Oplan Baha” in coordination with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to address drainage concerns and reduce flooding. However, she acknowledged that the problem cannot be resolved immediately, making preparedness essential for residents living in vulnerable areas.
“Ini ang realidad sa aton. Kinahanglan gid nga makaplano kita anay kay kon indi kita preparado, mabudlayan gid kita,” Artillero said.
Aside from flooding, the PDRRMU is also monitoring landslide-prone communities, particularly in the mountainous areas of Ivisan and Dumarao, where prolonged rainfall may trigger soil movement.
Artillero said the province has prepared contingency plans for possible worst-case scenarios and continues to conduct disaster preparedness training for local government units and barangays to strengthen emergency reporting and response.
The reminder coincides with the observance of National Disaster Resilience Month, celebrated under Executive Order No. 29, Series of 2017, which promotes disaster preparedness and community resilience nationwide.
Artillero encouraged every household to prepare emergency “go bags,” identify safe evacuation areas, and stay updated with official weather advisories before severe weather conditions develop.
