Earthquake damages 11 classrooms in Sigma

Eleven classrooms from three schools in the Municipality of Sigma were declared unsafe for occupancy following the Visayas-wide earthquake last September 30, 2025.

In a report submitted to  Mayor Dante Rizal Eslabon, the Municipal Engineer’s Office identified the unsafe classrooms from two separate high schools and one elementary school.

Engineer John Lyndon D. Jarencio said these included five classrooms of Vicente Andaya Sr. National High School, four classrooms of Jose Reyes Jarencio Elementary School and two classrooms of Mianay National High School.

As a temporary solution, the affected schools are using their respective stages as alternative learning spaces.

The Department of Education (DepEd) separately reported that 448 out of 7,259 classrooms in the province had earthquake damage.

Capiz Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Roel Bermejo recently said they are coordinating with local government engineers to gather recommendations that will be forwarded to DepEd’s Central Office in Metro Manila for possible repair or reconstruction.

Meanwhile, it is still unclear if the October 10 earthquake that struck Davao Oriental and also impacted the Visayas worsened the damage of the affected classrooms.  (Photo from Ang Sinag Publication of Vicente Andaya Sr. National High School)
