The impeachment bid against Vice President Sara Duterte ignited a bitter feud—exposing deep political fractures and raising fundamental questions about accountability, governance, and the rule of law. Those who supported the impeachment charged her with culpable violation of the Constitution, betrayal of public trust, graft and corruption, and even high crimes such as bribery and conspiracy to commit murder.
But should Duterte be held accountable beyond the political drama, or is this another power struggle disguised as a legal battle?
The impeachment charges painted a damning picture of VP Duterte, alleging misuse of public funds, unethical governance, and, most shockingly, involvement in high crimes. Among the most contentious issues is the alleged misuse of confidential and intelligence funds (CIFs)—a budget category notorious for lacking transparency.
Duterte’s defenders argue that the impeachment complaint is nothing more than a politically motivated attack orchestrated by rivals who seek to weaken her position ahead of the 2028 presidential race.
But dismissing every impeachment attempt as “politically motivated” is a dangerous precedent. Suppose leaders are never held accountable due to political considerations. In that case, impunity will remain the norm—those who push for Duterte’s impeachment claim that a commitment to transparency and justice drives their actions. If accurate, they must ensure their case is built on facts, not political revenge.
This feud is not just about Sara Duterte. It’s about the kind of political culture the Philippines tolerates. If the impeachment fails due to lack of support—not because the allegations are false, but because Duterte’s political allies shield her—then its loyalty matters more than the law.
But if the impeachment gains ground, it could be a turning point for accountability in the Philippines. It would show that no politician is above scrutiny, no matter how powerful or well-connected.
The question is whether Congress has the political will to pursue the truth, even if it means going against a sitting vice president.
This impeachment battle will define the integrity of Philippine democracy. Lawmakers must prove that their actions are about justice, not just politics. The public, too, demands transparency, not just from Duterte but from all those who wield power. If this concerns accountability, let the truth be uncovered—no matter the political consequences.
