A new floodway project worth around P500 million will be built in the Municipality of Panay.
Construction is underway following the August 15, 2025 groundbreaking ceremony in Barangay Pawa with Capiz Governor Fredenel “Oto” Castro, Congressman Howard Guinto, Mayor Sonny Besa, and Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) officials.
The Cogon–Jamul-awon Floodway is a major component of the Panay River Basin Integrated Development Project (PRBIDP), a long-envisioned initiative designed to address the recurring flooding that has affected Panay and surrounding municipalities for decades.
To be built by F. Gurrea Construction Inc., the project will cover approximately 7.5 kilometers of new floodway infrastructure.
Its primary goal is to divert excess water and minimize the flooding that frequently damages agricultural lands, homes, and businesses.
“This project is a realization of a long-time dream not only for Panay, but for the whole province of Capiz,” said Besa.
This was likewise echoed by Castro and Guintu.
Also present were members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan and Sangguniang Bayan, and barangay officials.
