Panay breaks ground for coastal tourism project

The Municipality of Panay is a step closer in boosting its coastal tourism project that also protects the environment.

Secretary Christina Garcia-Frasco of the Department of Tourism (DOT), Governor Fredenil “Oto” Castro, Vice Governor James “Mitang” Magbanua, and Mayor Vicente “Vic” Bermejo led the April 5 groundbreaking of Panay: A Coastal Resource Experience Project.

The project in Barangay Pawa is a grant after winning 5th place in DOT’s Tourism Champions Challenge (TCC), a program which pushes local government units (LGUs) to propose forward-thinking, environmentally responsible and community-centered tourism infrastructure projects.

The project includes the rehabilitation of the Pawa Tourist Passenger Terminal, the construction of eco-friendly mangrove cottages, and the establishment of a community-based rural tourism (CBRT) program.

The project also aims to empower the local community with livelihood opportunities while safeguarding their natural environment.

The project in Panay is a partnership with Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA), an attached agency of the DOT.

Also present during the April 5 groundbreaking ceremony were DOT Assistant Secretary Judilyn Quiachon, DOT Undersecretary Maria Rica Bueno, DOT Undersecretary Shahlimar Hofer Tamano, TIEZA Assistant Chief Operating Officer Gregory Oller, DOT Office of Special Concerns Director Glenn Albert Ocampo, and DOT-6 Regional Director Crisanta Marlene “Krisma” Rodriguez.

The key DOT officials also attended other activities of the Capiztahan 2025. (Department of Tourism & Capiz Provincial Government Communications Group)
