PAPI: Justice for Johnny Dayang

By Edalyn B. Acta

The Publishers Association of the Philippines Inc. (PAPI) wants justice for its chairman emeritus Juan “Johnny” Dayang, who was murdered at his home in Kalibo, Aklan.

“We strongly condemn his killing and we are calling for justice. He did not deserve a cruel and senseless end,” said PAPI President Nelson S. Santos.

PAPI considered Dayang’s April 29, 2025 death as a significant loss to the Philippine media.

“He remained deeply committed to press freedom and the advancement of provincial media,” said PAPI in a statement.

The 89-year-old served as president of PAPI for over 20 years.

Dayang was also president of the Manila Overseas Press Club, director of the National Press Club, and founding president of the Federation of Provincial Press Clubs of the Philippines.

Dayang was also secretary of the Catholic Mass Media Awards.

In public service, Dayang served as OIC mayor of Kalibo when he was appointed by President Cory Aquino in 1986.
