The Municipality of Sigma became the first local government unit (LGU) in the entire Region 6 to implement a speed limit ordinance.
Mayor Dante Rizal Eslabon said the ordinance that took effect on Sunday, June 1, aims to reduce road accidents, especially fatal ones.
The implementation is by virtue of Ordinance No. 05-Series of 2024 or otherwise known as “An Ordinance Setting the Speed Limit for All Kinds of Vehicles Within the Territorial Jurisdiction of the Municipality of Sigma”.
Land Transportation Office (LTO) praised LGU Sigma’s proactive approach for road safety, which is a cornerstone campaign of LTO and mother agency Department of Transportation (DOTr).
“By integrating technology with law enforcement, Sigma is setting a benchmark for other LGUs in enhancing public safety on our roads,” said LTO-6 Regional Director Atty. Gaudioso P. Geduspan.
The LGU of Sigma is using 24/7 speed enforcement cameras. These are found in three strategic barangays: Pari-an, Dayhagon, and Tawog.
The system is going to be operated by Sigma LGU’s Public Order and Safety Unit (POSU) in coordination with the LTO Dumalag District Office and the Sigma Municipal Police Station (MPS).
Present during last week’s launching were POSU Head Stephen Orillanes, LTO Dumalag District Chief Riza V. Otayde, and Sigma MPS Chief Police Captain Mark Anthony Garcia. (With reports from LTO-6))
