The historical marker for the Siege of Panay was unveiled in the Municipality of Panay last January 14, 2025.
The historical marker can be found along Calle Revolucion, which is believed to be the second oldest street in the country.
The Siege of Panay is a major historical event in the history of Capisnons—where the Ati, the Panay Bukidnon and the Agraviados fought as part of the Katipunan led by Generals Esteban Contreras, Juan Arce and Macario Lucso.
Around 4,000 Katipuneros fought against the Spanish forces of a thousand led by General Diego de los Rios. The siege took four hours and claimed the lives 172 Capisnon heroes.
The historical marker for the Siege of Panay is the fourth installed as part of Project Mohon—
the installation of markers that aims to increase the recognition for local heritage sites, historic events, and significant personalities of Capiz.
The Capiz Provincial Government—through the Provincial Tourism and Cultural Affairs Office—collaborated with historian Dr. Vicente C. Villan for Project Mohon.
A Capisnon history professor at UP Diliman, Villan has conducted rigorous and long-established research in Capiz history that served as the project’s guiding principles.
Villan had assistance of Erwin Bonifacio in writing the text for the Siege of Panay historical marker.
The installation of the Siege of Panay historical marker was also a collaboration with Panay local government unit (LGU), the Capiz Provincial Engineer’s Office, the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP Capiz Chapter), and the Capiz Provincial Culture and Arts Council.
